Several structures were destroyed by a fierce fire that broke out along the Agbogba to Ritz Junction Road near Madina late Sunday [February 9] night.

The tragic fire reduced multiple wooden and container structures to ashes and devastated several businesses and residences.

A team from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) swiftly mobilized and moved to the scene, preventing the raging flames from spreading to other areas.

Speaking on the incident, GNFS spokesperson Alex King Nartey attributed the rapid spread of the fire to the flammable nature of the affected structures.

“This is at Agbogba, close to the Police Station involving about 30 wooden structures. It is a lot of wooden and container structures planted together so it made the spread of the fire much easier.”

While the inferno inflicted partial damage on at least 10 structures, firefighters managed to protect over 50 nearby buildings, averting an even greater disaster.

One of the major challenges in controlling the inferno was the difficulty in accessing locked containers, many of which were reinforced with air conditioning units and heavy-duty doors.

Alex King Nartey also stressed on the lack of accessibility which he said posed challenges to swiftly dealing with the inferno.

“Accessibility alone is one of the problems as we are struggling to get to the seat of the fire to fight it,” he lamented.

Firefighters also faced additional risks from nearby Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) poles, with some responders reportedly experiencing electric shocks during the operation.

Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the fire, and investigations are ongoing.
