Samuel Twumasi, a 37-year-old driver, broke down in tears after an Accra Circuit Court discharged him of conspiracy and two counts of defrauding by false pretences.

During the court proceedings, Chief Inspector Wisdom Alorwu, the lead prosecutor, informed the court that the police lacked sufficient evidence to prosecute Twumasi.

Following this submission, the presiding judge, Mr. Samuel Bright Acquah, ordered his discharge.

As Twumasi stepped out of the dock, he wept uncontrollably. Despite efforts by some police officers to console him, urging, “Barima nsu” (meaning “Men don’t cry”), he could not hold back his tears.

His emotional reaction was partly because he had remained in police custody, unable to meet the bail conditions set by the court.

Twumasi had been on trial alongside Isaac Danso, a 38-year-old communication consultant, who faced the same charges. However, Danso was not present in court when Twumasi was discharged.

The prosecution revealed that Danso had been re-arrested and was currently in police custody at Kasoa. With Twumasi’s release, Danso would now face trial alone.

Danso is accused of collecting $4,000 from Adinan Lamidi under the pretext of securing a Canadian visa. Additionally, he allegedly took $2,000 from Marwan Mustapha for the same purpose but failed to deliver.

The accused persons were initially arrested on September 15, 2024.
