President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has underscored the government’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of workers and pensioners.

Notably, he said, the government has made substantial improvements to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) scheme, including a 25% increase in pensions in 2023—the highest since the introduction of the contributory Three-Tier Pension Scheme. “This demonstrates our dedication to ensuring that our senior citizens are well supported in their retirement,” he stated.

President Akufo-Addo said these in a keynote address at the 12th Quadrennial Delegates Congress of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) at the Pentecost Convention Centre in Gomoa Fetteh, Central Region on Tuesday, August 20, 2024.

Pension Assets
The President indicated that the growth of pension assets, which have increased by over 350% from GHc 15.7 billion in 2016 to GHc 71.69 billion in 2024, is a testament to the government’s commitment to safeguarding the future of all Ghanaians.

Jobs
Touching on jobs, the President said, ”Our efforts have been fruitful, with initiatives like the Ghana Jobs and Skills Project and the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) providing employment opportunities for over 700,000 young Ghanaians since 2017.”

Industrial Peace
President Akufo-Addo reflected on the remarkable contributions of the TUC in fostering industrial peace and harmony within the labour sector. “Over the past seven years, my government has worked closely with Organized Labour to resolve industrial disputes amicably, ensuring a stable environment that supports economic growth and job creation”, he stated.
