The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called out Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, accusing him of adopting an autocratic approach to intimidate the Minority caucus.

The party maintains, the Speaker’s decision to suspend three NPP MPs following last week’s chaotic vetting proceedings is unacceptable and undermines their role in holding the government accountable.

“The party views this selective and autocratic posture of the Speaker as dangerous, with these actions packaged to cow the Minority into submission, consequently weakening its potential to hold the government accountable,” the NPP stated in a press release issued on Monday, February 3.

The party’s official response comes after the Minority caucus held a press conference earlier in the day to address the suspensions.

Former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, for instance, has condemned the Speaker’s actions, arguing that Mr. Bagbin had violated the constitution and failed to follow parliamentary standing orders.
