Former Finance Minister Dr Mohammed Amin Adam has responded sharply to President John Dramani Mahama’s recent comments that the economy he inherited was criminally mishandled.

On February 20, during a meeting of the National Tripartite Committee at the Ministry of Labour, Jobs, and Employment, President Mahama condemned the management of the economy by the previous NPP government. He stated, “We all knew the economy was in crisis, but some of the things I am uncovering reveal a criminal mishandling of our economy. Ghana is now a crime scene. How can a government be so reckless? I cannot understand.”

Questions for Mahama
In response, Dr Amin Adam criticized President Mahama for being untruthful. In a Facebook post, he posed two questions to the President and his government: ”How could an economy described as criminally mishandled afford to increase the base pay for public sector workers by 30% in 2023, followed by 23% from January to June 2024, and 25% from July to December 2024, while still posting decent fiscal deficits?”

”What has changed between December 2024 and February 2025 that suddenly put the economy in crisis, making it unable to afford a base pay adjustment of more than 10%?”
