A wave of condemnation has emerged following the harassment of Ben Peters, a Nigerian businessman residing in Accra, by national security operatives on Monday.

Many believe that the raid and attempted arrest of Peters, along with the arrest of his security personnel by a combined team of National Security operatives, police, and military members, lacked professionalism and constituted a politically motivated witch-hunt.

Concerns for Foreign Investment
There is a growing consensus that this incident, which has drawn attention from international media, could deter foreign investment in Ghana.

The operation was led by Richard Jakpa, the Director of Operations for National Security, and Mustapha Gbande, the Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency.

Reports indicate that the action was initiated following a dispute between Peters and the management of his residential community.

Political Implications
During the raid on Peters’ home and the subsequent arrest of his security staff, Mr. Gbande attempted to associate Peters with Ghana’s opposition party, the NPP. Many view this as an unnecessary politicization and persecution of a foreigner who has been legally residing in Ghana.

Public Disappointment
James Koomson, a frustrated Ghanaian, expressed his thoughts on Facebook: “The issue was between the businessman and the management of his residence. Even if he broke the law, what is the political angle? It’s clear that Jakpa and Gbande are engaging in witch-hunting.”

Koomson and others believe the unprofessional conduct demonstrated by the national security could discourage foreign investors from entering the country.
